Biologist and author Dr. Kenneth R. Miller, an evolutionist and
Catholic, will share his insight on the ability to share
a belief in God and evolution in his talk, Reconciling Science
and Faith: Finding Darwin’s God, Thursday, March 1 at 3 p.m.
in Phelps Stokes Chapel at Berea College.
A professor of biology at Brown University, Miller is the author
of Finding Darwin’s God: A Scientist’s Search for Common
Ground between God and Evolution (1999). His study of evolution
versus intelligent design has driven him to serve as a witness
in court cases and serve on panels debating the issue of teaching
intelligent design in public schools. Miller served as a witness
in a case involving the Cobb County Georgia Board of Education
in which the school system was ordered by a federal court judge
to remove stickers from one of Miller’s own textbooks which
suggested that evolution was just a theory.
Miller completed his undergraduate work at Brown University and
earned a PhD at the University of Colorado. Before returning to
teach on the faculty at Brown in 1980, Miller taught at Harvard
University for six years.
Some of Miller’s other works on evolution include, Life’s
Grand Design and The Failure of “Design.” In addition
to his study of evolution, he has published more than 50 scientific
papers and reviews on his research on cell membrane structure and
function. Miller also has co-authored, with Joseph S. Levine, three
different high school and college biology text books, titled “Biology.”

Presented as the 2007 Berea College Science Lecture, the event
is free and open to the public.
