A HYMN FESTIVAL entitled “And His Name Shall Be Called .
. . Biblical Images of Christ.” will be presented in Union
Church, Berea (corner of Main and Prospect) on Sunday evening,
January 28th at 7:30 p.m. The service is co-sponsored by the Music
Department and the Campus Christian Center. There is no charge
for admission, and the event is open to the public.
The festival is the culmination of a short-term course on hymnology
taught by Berea College music faculty members Stephen Bolster and
John Courter during the month of January. The 2007 Hymn Festival
is the seventh in a series of Hymn Festivals designed by Bolster,
Courter and their students over the past two decades.
Congregational hymn singing will be the central activity of this
special service that will feature class members as singers, instrumentalists,
readers, and as hymn writers and composers. The hymns selected
for the festival will span several centuries and will involve many
different styles of hymn singing. Several “old favorites” will
be sung in addition to more unfamiliar hymns and t newly-composed
hymns by class members. All of the hymns will relate to the central
theme of the festival: “And He Shall Be Called . . . Biblical
Images of Christ.” A variety of hymns containing Biblical
titles and names of Christ will be chosen from various cultures
and nationalities. For each of the hymns, student readers will
present information about the text and tune, author and composer.
