Berea College celebrates 131st annual “Mountain Day” Oct 18

10/5/06

Students will get a day off classes and work and a day on for outdoor fun on Wednesday, Oct. 18 for Berea College Mountain Day, a College tradition since 1875.

This year’s activities include hayrides out to the mountains and back, leaving Alumni Building Circle every 30 minutes from 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.; lunch, games, music, food and contests from noon – 3 p.m.; and of course, hiking in the College forest all day. All activities are open to the public.

The celebration begins with another tradition on Tuesday, Oct. 17, when the Berea College Wind and Jazz Ensembles will present their 31th annual Mountain Day Eve concert in Woods-Penniman Commons. Admission is free.

At “the mountain” (College Forest on Ky. Hwy 21) teams of students will compete in a “Race for the Summit” from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. to raise funds for their residence halls, clubs and other campus organizations and other hikers are invited to join them. Students will compete in “Pioneer Games” that include cross-cut saw and log toss and here will also be a variety of other games, activities and food for children as well as adults at Indian Fort Theatre from noon -3 p.m.

A barbeque lunch served at Indian Fort Theatre is open to all. Cost is $5 for non-boarding students and all others and can be purchased on site. (Lunch will not be served in Berea College Dining Services).

In case of rain on Wednesday, activities and lunch are scheduled in Upper Seabury Gym of Seabury Center, beginning at 11 a.m.

Additional information on Mountain Day Eve and Mountain Day activities is available by contacting Holli Hudson or Shalimar Sandifer at the Berea College Campus Life office (859) 985-3290.
