The third concert in the Summer Carillon Concert Series at Berea
College will feature TAM, Tin-Shi, a native of Hong Kong. She is
currently Carillonneur of Iowa State University in Ames, and Cownie
Professor of Music. Her varied program on the 56-bell carillon
in the Draper Building Tower will feature the Chinese folksong “Under
the Silver Moon” in her own arrangement. Transcriptions and
original pieces by Italian, Russian and Flemish composers will
be heard, and the program will close with John Courter’s “Suite
in Popular Style,” which includes the styles of Ragtime,
Blues, Ballad and a March.
Dr. TAM earned music degrees from the Chinese University of Hong
Kong, The University of Wales, and the University of Michigan,
where she first became attracted to the carillon. She also has
a Master’s degree in Arts Management.
A celebrated artist on carillon and organ, TAM has given recitals
in Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, and the United States. She
has been a featured recitalist at Carillon Festivals in France,
Florida, and Illinois, and at the Peace Tower of the Houses of
Parliament in Ottawa, Canada. She has performed for several Congresses
of The Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, including Princeton
(1995), the University of Michigan (2002) and Grand Valley State
University (2005). She has also served on the Guild’s Examination
Committee for certifying new carillonneurs.
Seating in the College Quadrangle will be provided, and a video
monitor will allow persons at ground level to view the player in
action. The concert will last for one hour. Admission is free.
The final concert of the Summer Series will be held on Labor Day,
Monday, September 4 at 8 pm, and will feature Berea Carillonneur
John Courter
