| Students
in Dr. Robert Smith's Social Gerontology class at Berea College
have spent the spring semester visiting with 10 residents at the
Berea Health Care Center - listening to the residents as they talk
about their lives and recording the interviews on videotape for
a “Video Life History Project.”
The result is an hour-long video that will “premier” May
12 during National Nursing Home Week. The video will be shown
at a barbeque lunch at the Berea Health Care Center to all of
the residents, their families Center staff, and the video's student
producers.
For the students, the service-learning project in partnership
with the Berea Health Care Center was designed to help them understand
the importance of this kind of intergenerational exchange. For
relatives, it is hoped they’ll learn more about the lives
of their family member. And for the residents, who all volunteered
to take part in the project, it was an opportunity to share their
unique and valuable life experiences with family and friends,
and also contribute to a permanent history of the Berea community.
