| For
two weeks in June 2005, students and faculty from Berea College
explored European sites connected with the Holocaust. An exhibit
about their journey, combining photos, reflections and poetry is
now on display at Berea College’s Hutchins Library.
Most of the 21 students, five faculty members and three guests
who took part contributed to the exhibit. Dianne Hellwig, associate
professor of agriculture and natural resources, and one of the
organizers of the exhibit, had family members who died in the
Holocaust. Working with her was Martha Beagle, professor of physical
education and health.
A striking feature of the exhibit is a photo montage created
using special computer software incorporating all of the photos
submitted from the trip. At close range, each tiny image is distinct,
but from a distance, the photos merge and blend into one image
of the entrance to Birkenau concentration camp, also called the “Death
Entrance.”
The trip was part of a course called The Holocaust: A Study-Travel
Course – Germany, Czech Republic, & Poland taught by
Steve Gowler, head of public services for Hutchins Library and
associate professor of library science, and Susan Yorde, assistant
professor of early childhood education and director of Berea’s
child development laboratory.
The exhibit will remain on display through April 30. For more
