The
music and rhythms of Africa will be performed by the Gambia National
Choir in a concert at Berea's Union Church, Saturday, August
27, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Wearing their bright West African attire, the Gambia National
Choir will perform both Christian and indigenous music with the
melodies and rhythms of their country. The Choir will also perform
a colorful dramatized musical piece titled "The Hunt." Music
is an essential component of the Gambia's indigenous religions
and choirs play a major role in the life of the Christian Church
there as well. Many aspects of the traditional music of the Gambia
have been adopted by the Christian community.
The concert, which is the Gambia Choir's only appearance in
Kentucky, is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored
by the Berea College International Center as part of its year-long "Focus
on Africa" for the 2005-06 academic year. For additional
information, call (859) 985-3452.
