Eboo Patel, Executive Director and founder of Inter-Faith Youth Core,
be the featured speaker and lead an inter-faith dialogue at Berea College’s
annual Convocation focused on service, this Thursday, April 28 at 3 p.m.
in Phelps-Stokes Chapel.
The event is free and open to the public.
Patel’s nonprofit organization, Inter-Faith Youth Core (IFYC),
brings together young people (ages 15-25) from diverse faiths, traditions
and communities to engage in social action projects. Patel founded
the independent, Chicago-based organization in 1998, on the premise
that most religions share a desire to work for social justice and that
by bringing together young leaders from different faiths and communities,
many conflicts between religious communities can be reduced if not
resolved.
Patel earned his doctorate in the Sociology of Religion from the University
of Oxford, where he studied on a Rhodes Scholarship. He serves on the
Board of Directors of the International Interfaith Centre and the Interfaith
Initiative of the Points of Light Foundation and is President of the
Board of CrossCurrents Magazine.
Patel writes regularly for international publications and has given
talks at venues all over the world, including UNESCO Headquarters in
Paris, Harvard University and the Nobel Peace Prize Forum, where he
appeared with President Jimmy Carter. He has been profiled by the Sunday
Chicago Tribune, Conscious Choice Magazine and Utne Magazine, which
named him one of “thirty social visionaries under thirty changing
the world”. Patel is an Ashoka Fellow, selected as part of an
elite international network of “social entrepreneurs” implementing
ideas with the potential to change the pattern of our society.
The Service Convocation is co-sponsored by the Campus Christian Center
and the Center for Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Service (CELTS).
