College Labor Day, a tradition begun in 1922, celebrates the work values
to which Berea is committed -- the dignity of all labor and serving the
common good through work that benefits the college and community. This
year’s theme is “Workers at Play.”
Classes are cancelled as students, faculty and staff enjoy a day of
fun, celebration and volunteer service projects. New this year will
be a mid-day Festival on the Draper Quad with food, music and games.
Labor departments are also sponsoring booths and contests related to
their work, such as an agriculture obstacle course, car race and office
challenge.
In the spirit of honoring student work (every Berea student works
a minimum of 10 hours per week in a College job) and to allow all students "a
day off," faculty and staff will assume some jobs usually performed
by students, such as preparing and serving meals in campus Dining Services
and elsewhere on campus for the day.
Labor Day eve, Monday, April 25, there will a street dance from 7:30-9:30
in front of Boone Tavern on the College Square, sponsored by the Berea
College Country Dancers. The public is invited.
Tuesday's Labor Day activities will kick-off with a pancake breakfast
in the College’s Dining Services 7-9 a.m. A variety of service
projects are scheduled from 9-11 a.m. The campus-wide Festival is scheduled
for 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. In addition to the booths and games, various
musicians will play on the library steps throughout the afternoon.
From 5-7 p.m. there will be a Dinner Cookout on the Alumni Building
patio. Dinner is free for Berea students; $5 for all others.
The annual Labor Day Jazz Concert will follow dinner, from 7-9 p.m.,
in the Woods-Penniman Building Commons. Performing will be the College’s
Wind Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra and Contemporary Percussion Ensemble,
under the direction of Dr. Chuck Turner. The concert is free and open
to the public.
Students who are receiving college-wide awards for achievement in
the Labor Program will be honored at an Awards Banquet from 6-8 p.m.
in Boone Tavern.
