Berea College's Rebecca May, a sophomore guard from Waynesburg, was named
an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American in women's Division II basketball.
May is the first women's basketball player at Berea to ever receive All-America
recognition.
The Lady Mountaineers, who finished with a 22-5 record and were the
regular season conference champions, also had another record-setting
season. They led the NAIA (all men's and women's divisions) in scoring
for the second year in a row by averaging 102 points per game. The only
schools in the country to average more points per game were Grinnell,
Redlands and Westchester in the NCAA Men's Div. III.
Head Coach Bunky Harkleroad was named KIAC Coach of the Year. This
is the third time in four years Harkleroad has been named Coach of the
Year in his five years as head coach.
Named to the All-KIAC team were senior forward Ashley Miller of Louisville
and junior point guard Crystal Davis, from Wilmington, Ohio, along with
May, who was named first team All-KIAC.
May averaged 19 points per game, led the nation in three-point baskets
made per game, averaging 4.7, hit 122 three point field goals for the
season. She also broke the single season scoring record at Berea by scoring
475 points this year.
Miller finished her career by becoming the College's all-time leading
rebounder. Both Miller and junior guard Morissa Benberry also joined
the elite 1,000 point club (only four players in school history have
achieved this). Miller and Benberry also played high school ball
together at Dupont Manual High School in Louisville.
Davis led the nation in assist/turnover ratio and led the KIAC this
season in assists per game.
Jessica Engle, a freshman from Berea who played for Berea Community
School, also had an outstanding first season, hitting 95 three point
baskets and scoring 474 points in her first year with the Lady Mountaineers.
