Twiggs, a junior at Berea College, will be recognized for her work with
Madison County students at the Madison County School Board meeting Dec.
p.m. The meeting, at Kirksville Elementary School, will begin at 6 p.m.
Twiggs, a Spanish major from Lenoir City, Tenn., will be recognized
for initiating and coordinating an “English as a Second Language” (ESL)
program at Shannon Johnson Elementary School for Hispanic students
and for her work with several other programs of the School’s
Family Resource Center. Twiggs was nominated for the award by Cindy
Saylor, Shannon Johnson Family Resource Center director.
Twiggs began ESL tutoring at the school last year, as part of a Spanish
course she was taking at Berea. When the course ended, she saw a continuing
need for the tutoring. Working with Saylor and with the help of the
Center for Excellence in Learning Through Service (CELTS) at Berea
College, Twiggs established an on-going ESL program as part of the
Resource Center’s services. In addition to tutoring students
herself, Twiggs recruited other Berea College students as tutors for
the program.
Additional responsibilities Twiggs has taken on with the Family Resource
Center include going on home visits to translate for Hispanic families
or finding translators when she is unable to go, and organizing a clothing
drive in some the Berea College residence halls to benefit the Center’s
Clothing Closet. This holiday season, she is helping with the Food
Drive and Food Basket programs sponsored by the Center, including recruiting
other Berea College student volunteers for the project.
At Berea, Twiggs is a Bonner Scholar and has worked with the CELTS
Teen Program, an after school mentoring program. This year, her job
in the College’s labor program is CELTS student Chaplain.

learning coordinator, and Cindy Saylor, director, Johnson Elementary
