The McHugh-Oliphant Duo, Duo-in Residence at the University of Louisville
(UofL) will perform an all-Beethoven program Friday evening, Nov. 12 at
Berea College. The recital in Presser Hall’s Gray Auditorium will
begin at 8 p.m.
The performance is part of the a state-wide tour in celebration of the
retirement at the end of the year of Duo violinist Peter McHugh, after
a 39-year career as professor of violin at UofL. For the tour, the Duo
is performing Beethoven’s complete cycle of Sonatas for Piano and
Violin. On their program in Berea, the Duo will be playing Sonatas #5,
6 and 7.
The event is one of several guest performances sponsored annually by
Berea’s Music Department, and is free and open to the public.
The McHugh-Oliphant Duo was founded in 1983 and since that time has
performed over 300 concerts across the United States and Canada, including
performances on the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Recital Series in Chicago
and at The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. They also have undertaken
three European Tours, one at the invitation of the American Embassy and
USIA.
It has been part of the mission of the Duo to tour to all areas of the
state of Kentucky, and with Project Grants from the Kentucky Arts Council,
they have taken concerts to areas where classical concerts are rarely
heard. Previously, the Duo presented concert series dedicated to works
for piano and violin of Mozart and of Johannes Brahms.
McHugh, as Distinguished Professor of Violin and University Scholar
at UofL, is active not only as a violist with the McHugh-Oliphant Duo,
the Louisville String Quartet, and the Kentucky Center Chamber Artists.
He has been Concertmaster and soloist with the Louisville Orchestra,
San Diego Symphony and other major American symphony orchestras, and
played with many other orchestras. He has recorded for RCA, New Albion
Records and Louisville First Edition Recordings.
Naomi Oliphant, pianist of The McHugh-Oliphant Duo, has earned an international
reputation as a soloist and chamber musician on both piano and harpsichord
throughout the U.S.A., Canada and Europe. She has appeared with the Toronto
Symphony under Seiji Ozawa, the Louisville Orchestra and the Louisville
Ballet and has been aired on radio and television throughout North America
and Europe. In the UofL School of Music, she is Chair of the Keyboard
Department. She also is very active as a guest lecturer, clinician and
adjudicator.
