Dr.
Lily Feidy, deputy for program design and management for Jerusalem-based
MIFTAH (The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue
and Democracy) will deliver the annual Robbins Peace and Brotherhood
Lecture at Berea College Oct. 21. She will speak on "The Role of
Women in Promoting Peace: Israel-Palestine".
The event is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel.
Dr. Feidy, whose daughter is a Berea College sophomore, will be
in Berea Oct. 18-22. Her talk is one of several activities she will
be taking part in that week, including meetings with several classes
and "Refugees' Journeys: From Camps to Campus," a United
Nations Day Forum on Oct. 22 at which a group of Berea students from
different countries will talk about their experiences as former refugees.
MIFTAH is a non-governmental, non-partisan institution dedicated
to fostering democracy and good governance within Palestinian society
through promoting public accountability, transparency, the free flow
of information and ideas, and the challenging of stereotyping at
home and abroad. It's guiding principles are democracy, human rights,
gender equity and participatory governance in Palestine. Founded
in 1988, MIFTAH's education, information and international relations
programs have given it an influential role in promoting dialogue
and addressing key issues in the Middle East. In her position with
MIFTAH, Feidy is responsible for strategic planning, program development,
supervision of program officers and day to day management of the

From 1996-2002, Feidy was Director General for International and
Cultural Relations in the Ministry of Higher Education in Palestine.
From 1978 - 1996, she was an administrator and member of the English
and literature faculty of Birzeit University, West Bank, Palestine,
where she served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and was chair of
the English and Literature Department.
Feidy is on the board of directors of AMPAL (Americans and Palestinians
for Peace) and has taken part in conferences and committees related
to Higher Education and Middle East Issues.
Born in Jerusalem, West Bank, Feidy earned her B.A. in English and
Literature from Birzeit University, then studied in the United States
where she earned a M.A. from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D.
in Applied Linguistics from the University of Delaware.
Feidy's lecture and other activities are sponsored by the Berea
College Campus Christian Center, the International Center and the
Earl and Sue Robbins Lecture Fund.
The Robbins Peace and Brotherhood Lectureship at Berea was established
by the late Earl G. Robbins and his wife, Sue D. Robbins, of Lexington,
along with members of their family. Mr. Robbins, a retired insurance
executive, was an alumnus and former trustee of the College. Initiated
in 1989, the Robbins Lectures have brought to central Kentucky speakers
involved in many of the nation's and world's most pressing issues,
and who have brought perspectives and insights that can assist those
listening, in Mr. Robbins words, to "decide what is important
in life."
