Students
will get a day off classes and work and a day on for outdoor fun on Wednesday,
Oct. 20 for Berea College Mountain Day, a College tradition since 1875.
“Rocktober Fest,” this year’s celebration, includes
activities from the past with some new events for two days of games,
music, food, contests and hiking in the College forest. Several activities
are open to the whole community.
Activities for the community begin Tuesday, Oct. 19, Mountain Day
Eve, with the 28th annual pops concert by the Berea College Band in
Woods-Penniman Commons. Admission is free.
On Wednesday, students can take an old-fashioned hayride out to the
College forest beginning at 10 a.m., leaving from Union Church, or
shuttles beginning at 10:30 a.m., departing from the Alumni Building
Circle.
At the mountain (College Forest on Hwy 21 East), there will be activities
for students and families with children. Teams of students will compete
in a “Race for the Summit” to raise funds for their residence
halls, clubs and other campus organizations, from 10 a.m. – 2
p.m. “Scottish Highland Games” – cross-cut saw, atlatl
throw, log toss and bow and arrow – are back this year, and will
take place at Indian Fort Theatre from 11-3 p.m. Other activities include
a climbing wall and “Rocky Road” booths with face painting,
animal balloons and more.
A barbeque lunch will be served at Indian Fort Theatre from 10:30
a.m. - 1 p.m., with Laura Mize providing live rock and folk music.
Meal tickets for non-boarders are $5 and are available from Berea Dining
Services or can be purchased on site. (Lunch will not be served in
Dining Services).
