On
Thursday, Oct. 7, Lydia McCauley and Ensemble will perform their
eclectic mix of Celtic, medieval, and Appalachian music in a concert
at Berea
College’s Phelps Stokes Chapel beginning at 8 p.m.
The Ensemble consists of singer, songwriter, and pianist Lydia McCauley;
Phil Heaven, on viola and doumbek (a Middle Eastern style drum,) Brian
Cunningham, on acoustic and electric guitars; Lynne Givler, on double
bass, and Jason Darling on percussion.
The program will feature songs from the group’s five albums
and covers fourteen centuries of music from Galicia, Italy, Argentina,
the British Isles and Appalachia.
McCauley and Ensemble regularly tour throughout the United States
and Canada, and have appeared on television, at festivals, performing
art centers and other venues.
Inspiration for her music comes from McCauley’s travels abroad,
especially in the British Isles, and her years spent studying Appalachian
folk music while attending Berea College, working in festivals and
at the College’s Appalachian Museum.
Born in Seattle and raised in the southeast, McCauley grew up studying
classical music as a child. When she was sixteen, her family moved
to the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee and it was there that she
began learning about the Celtic music that had been brought over from
the British Isles. She now lives in the Pacific Northwest with her
husband and co-producer Kurt Scherer.
This Stephenson Memorial concert is free and open to the public. For
