Entering
the final month of regular season play, the Berea College Lady
Mountaineers have broken several national and team records while
earning a 16-6 overall record (4-2 in the KIAC.)
“
We made a lot of changes during the off-season and weren't real sure
what to expect,” says Coach Bunky Harkleroad. “Breaking
five national records in less than one season is outstanding work
and proves the players’ willingness to adapt”.
Currently the Lady Mountaineers are leading the nation (NAIA II)
in scoring, total rebounding, offensive rebounding, and threes
made per game. With three more conference games on the road and
two remaining home games - Feb. 12 against Bethel (Tenn.) College
and on Feb. 19 against Midway College, the squad is on track to
surpass the team record of 17 season wins, set in 1980. Both games
begin at 7 p.m. in Seabury Center arena.
The Lady Mountaineers have broken 5 national records this season
including:
- Most threes made in a game (23) vs Knoxville
- Most threes attempted
in a game (64) vs Asbury
- Most shots attempted in a game (112)
vs St. Louis Pharmacy
- Most threes attempted in a game (two
teams combined - 81) Berea vs Southern Virginia University
- Most points in a game (two teams combined - 218) Berea vs Alice
Lloyd (Berea 111-Alice Lloyd 107).
The team has also broken
4 school records including:
- Most points in a game (127) vs Knoxville College
- Most threes
made in a game (23) vs Knoxville College
- Most rebounds in a game
- Most points in a half (74) vs Knoxville.
Harkleroad recently
made a trip to Iowa, visiting Grinnell College Men’s basketball
coach David Arseneault, whose “shot
and shoot some more” offensive strategy adopted by the
Lady Mountaineers has seemed to be a big factor in the team’s
success this year.
“There was a window of opportunity in our schedule for me
to fly to Iowa and watch Grinnell practice and play,” says
Harkleroad. “Coach Arseneault welcomed me to both events
and he also welcomed me to his home, where we watched game tapes
and talked basketball for several hours over the course of 2 days.
It was a great experience” he said.
“I read about their program last season and became intrigued,” says
Harkleroad, “mainly because, like Berea, they are a non-scholarship
school that has a very high academic standard.” After learning
more, Harkleroad says he decided to “speed things up a bit” on
the Berea women’s team.
“We were kind of nervous at first making the switch. Assistant
Coach Tonya Edwards has bought in, our players have bought in,
but there is still a long way to go. I'd say we are still about
80% where we want to be.”

Berea hosts this year's KIAC Championship basketball tournaments
for both women and men 2/26 - 2/28. When it’s over, Harkleroad
hopes his Lady Mountaineers will be advancing to the national tournament.
