Ky. (11/14/02): Two outstanding alumni will be honored during Berea
College's homecoming activities, on the theme "Reflections
2002," Nov. 22-24.
Dr. Charles E. Timberlake, a 1957 graduate, will receive the College's
Distinguished Alumnus Award. A professor of Russian history at
the University of Missouri since 1967, he also has taught at universities
in England and Finland and has been a consultant and editor for
several international companies. The Walsh, Ky. native earned masters
and doctorate degrees from Claremont (California) Graduate School
and the University of Washington respectively and currently resides
in Columbia, Mo.
A 1982 alumnus, Wade Biddix, Supervisory District Conservationist
for eleven counties in Central Virginia, will receive the Outstanding
Young Alumnus Award. The Yancey County, Va. native is an avid community
volunteer, a Cub Scout Den leader and serves as the coach for youth
athletic teams. In addition to a B.S. in Agriculture and Natural
Resources from Berea, he is currently pursuing a masters degree
in Public Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Honored with the Rodney C. Bussey Alumni Award of Special Merit
will be Chuck Morgan, a 1967 graduate. Morgan has had a 30 year
career in the College's Admissions Office and currently serves
as a senior admissions officer. After earning a masters degree
in German from West Virginia University and teaching for two years,
he came back to Berea in 1972. Morgan is married to Jean Burgett
Morgan, also a 1967 graduate.
Timberlake and Biddix will receive their awards at the Alumni
Banquet scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. in the Boone Tavern
Dining Room. On Saturday morning, Morgan will receive his award
at 10 a.m. in the Baird Lounge, Alumni Building, following the
Alumni Coffee, scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
Also on Friday will be the Black Student Union Homecoming Pageant
from 7 - 9:30 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. Tickets are $5 for
students and $10 for all others.
Beginning at 9 p.m. is a concert by local band "Attic Down" in
Baird Lounge, Alumni Building, featuring College alumni, John Harmon,
'95, Shane Seals, '95, Art Cohenour, '00 as well as Benjamin Salyer.
A parade down Chestnut St. will begin at 11 a.m. (cancelled if
raining). Starting at 10:15, balloons, face painting and a magic
show will be offered in front of the Alumni Building and Fairchild
Hall. Rain site is the Alumni Building TV Lounge.
At noon, Reunion lunches are scheduled for the classes of '77,
'82, '87, '92, '97 and '02.
Several activities are scheduled for Saturday afternoon, including
the Black Music Ensemble fall concert in Union Church at 1:00 p.m.;
Dr. Gordon Ross Skittles Tournament at the Log House Craft Gallery,
1-3 p.m., and Weatherford Planetarium shows at 1:30 and 3 p.m.
Seabury Center will be the site of three basketball games on Saturday.
At 7:30 p.m., the Men's Varsity team will play Franklin College,
with the Coronation of Homecoming queen and king taking place at
halftime. Earlier, the Alumni, coached by Craig Jefferson, a 1980
alumnus, will challenge the Men's Junior Varsity team at 2 p.m.
and at 5:15 the Berea Women's Varsity team will play Knoxville
College.
All day Saturday, 9 a.m - 6 p.m., and on Sunday, 1 - 4 p.m., Berea
College Crafts will be holding its Annual Holiday Sale at the Acton
Folk Center on Jefferson Street.
Festivities on Saturday conclude with a Student/Alumni Reception
in Baird Lounge, and the Homecoming Dance for students and alumni
in the Woods-Penniman Commons. Both events are scheduled for 9
p.m. - 1 a.m.
On Sunday morning, Rev. Carol Jaynes Byrd, a 1982 graduate, will
lead an Alumni Worship Service in Union Church at 10:45, featuring
a performance by the Alumni Concert Choir.
Tickets are required for the Alumni Banquet on Friday and for
Saturday's luncheons and Men's Varsity Basketball game. For ticket
