Berea, Ky. (10/11/02): Norman Solomon, nationally syndicated columnist,
author, and media expert, will share his knowledge of bias present
in mainstream media, Thursday, Nov. 7 in Phelps Stokes Chapel as
guest speaker for Berea College's annual fall symposium.
The event will be presented in two separate sessions. At 1 p.m.,
Solomon will speak of his experiences with mainstream media. At
the close of the first session, the audience is then invited to
pose questions to Solomon in written form during the intermission.
At 3 p.m., he will answer these questions as well as serve as the
mediator of a dialogue exchange.
Solomon is the executive director of the Institute for Public
Accuracy (www.accuracy.org), a nationwide consortium of policy
researchers and analysts. He is an associate of the media watch
group FAIR (www.fair.org). He recently received the George Orwell
Award for Distinguished Contribution to Honesty and Clarity in
Public Language for his latest collection of syndicated columns,
which are featured in newspapers such as the The Washington Post,
Los Angeles Times, Newsday, New York Times, Boston Globe, Miami
Herald, USA Today, Philadelphia Inquirer, and Baltimore Sun. His
latest book "The Habits of Highly Deceptive Media," also
received an award from the National Association of Teachers of
English.
He has appeared as a guest on hundreds of television media shows
such PBS' "News Hour with Jim Lehrer," C-SPAN's "About
Books" and "Washington Journal," CNN's "Crossfire" and "Talkback
Live," PRI's "Marketplace," and NPR's "All
Things Considered," "Morning Edition," and "Talk
of the Nation."
Solomon has published nine books. His next book, concerning the
media and the money-dominated culture in the United States, is
scheduled for release in spring 2003. His current titles include: "The
Habits of Highly Deceptive Media" (1999), "Wizards of
Media Oz: Behind the Curtain of Mainstream News" (co-authored
with Jeff Cohen in 1997), "Through the Media Looking Glass" (co-authored
with Jeff Cohen in 1995), "The Power of Babble: The Politician's
Dictionary Buzzwords and Doubletalk for Every Occasion" (1992), "Unreliable
Sources: A Guide to Detecting Bias in News Media" (1990),
and "Killing Our Own: The Disaster of America's Experience
With Atomic Radiation" (co-authored in 1982).
