| Berea, Ky. (9/27/02): The Berea College Theatre 2002-2003 season
has begun with the casting completed and preparation for two shows
underway: Oliver Goldsmith’s “She Stoops to Conquer” and
Ntozake Shange’s “…for colored girls who have
considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf…”
Performances of “She Stoops to Conquer,” a late 18th
century comedy directed by Dr. Richard Sears, chair of the English,
theatre, and speech communication department, are scheduled for
Oct. 25-26, and Oct. 30 - Nov. 2 in the McGaw Theatre beginning
each night at 8 p.m.
“She Stoops to Conquer”, subtitled “The Mistakes
of the Night,” concerns itself with matchmaking, marriage,
as well as character and class as it follows the twisting path
of two lovers. Dr. Sears calls it, “ a delightful comedy," and "an
enormous pleasure for [him] to work on a script with so much wit
and insight, a tremendous sense of fun.” The cast is composed
of 24 faculty, staff, and students with additional members working
on scenery, lighting, and costumes.
“…for colored girls who have considered suicide when
the rainbow is enuf…,” the first ever co-production
between the Theatre Laboratory and the College’s Black Cultural
Center, will premiere in the McGaw Theatre Nov. 13, with repeat
performances Nov. 14-16 at 8 p.m. and a final performance Nov.
17 at 2 p.m.
“…for colored girls…” is directed by senior
Theatre major Carrie Stuart. “This play speaks to all people,
despite what its title suggests,” she said. The play is described
as “a beautiful, poignant and inspirational experience that
explores what it means to be both black and female.”
