September 25, 2002

Berea, Ky. (9/25/02): The Berea College Theatre Laboratory announces its production season for 2002-2003.

Opening the season, is Oliver Goldsmith's "She Stoops to Conquer," a late 18th century comedy directed by Dr. Richard Sears, Chair of the English, Theatre, and Speech Communication department. Subtitled, “The Mistakes of the Night,” this play concerns itself with matchmaking, marriage as well as character and class as it follows the twisting path of two lovers. The cast is composed of 24 faculty, staff, and students with additional members working on scenery, lighting, and costumes. Performances are scheduled to begin Oct. 25, with repeat performances Oct. 26, and Oct. 30 - Nov. 2 in the McGaw Theatre beginning each night at 8 p.m.

“…for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf…,” the first ever co-production between the Theatre Laboratory and the College’s Black Cultural Center, will premiere Nov. 13. Repeat performances will be Nov. 14-16 at 8 p.m. with a final performance Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. “…for colored girls…” is directed by senior Theatre major Carrie Stuart, who said, “this play speaks to all people, despite what its title suggests.” she said. Audiences have described the play as “a beautiful, poignant and inspirational experience that explores what it means to be both black and female.”

Next on the program, is Rebecca Gilman's "Spinning Into Butter." This drama shares the frank and devastating story of an unintentional, albeit devastating, act of racism on a small liberal arts campus. "The results force us to look inward and face our own social shortcomings," said director Deborah Martin, director of the Theatre Laboratory. Performances will be February 21, 22, February 26-March 1, beginning at 8 p.m. each evening.

"The Diary of Anne Frank, " the final play of the season, directed by senior theatre major Eric Baldwin. "The Diary of Anne Frank" has long been a definitive story of hope amid unspeakable horror and devastation. "The story of this simple young girl gives voice to our own thoughts of fear and hope; of what it means to be alive," Baldwin said. Performances are scheduled to begin May 2, with repeat performances May 3, 7-10 beginning at 8 p.m. each evening.
