Ky. (9/25/02): The Berea College Theatre Laboratory announces its
production season for 2002-2003.
Opening the season, is Oliver Goldsmith's "She Stoops to
Conquer," a late 18th century comedy directed by Dr. Richard
Sears, Chair of the English, Theatre, and Speech Communication
department. Subtitled, “The Mistakes of the Night,” this
play concerns itself with matchmaking, marriage as well as character
and class as it follows the twisting path of two lovers. The cast
is composed of 24 faculty, staff, and students with additional
members working on scenery, lighting, and costumes. Performances
are scheduled to begin Oct. 25, with repeat performances Oct. 26,
and Oct. 30 - Nov. 2 in the McGaw Theatre beginning each night
at 8 p.m.
“…for colored girls who have considered suicide when
the rainbow is enuf…,” the first ever co-production
between the Theatre Laboratory and the College’s Black Cultural
Center, will premiere Nov. 13. Repeat performances will be Nov.
14-16 at 8 p.m. with a final performance Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. “…for
colored girls…” is directed by senior Theatre major
Carrie Stuart, who said, “this play speaks to all people,
despite what its title suggests.” she said. Audiences have
described the play as “a beautiful, poignant and inspirational
experience that explores what it means to be both black and female.”
Next on the program, is Rebecca Gilman's "Spinning Into Butter." This
drama shares the frank and devastating story of an unintentional,
albeit devastating, act of racism on a small liberal arts campus. "The
results force us to look inward and face our own social shortcomings," said
director Deborah Martin, director of the Theatre Laboratory. Performances
will be February 21, 22, February 26-March 1, beginning at 8 p.m.
each evening.
"The Diary of Anne Frank, " the final play of the season,
directed by senior theatre major Eric Baldwin. "The Diary
of Anne Frank" has long been a definitive story of hope amid
unspeakable horror and devastation. "The story of this simple
young girl gives voice to our own thoughts of fear and hope; of
what it means to be alive," Baldwin said. Performances are
scheduled to begin May 2, with repeat performances May 3, 7-10
beginning at 8 p.m. each evening.
