Berea, Kentucky; -- Following their spring meeting, the Berea
College Board of Trustees announced the selection of M. Elizabeth
Culbreth as new Board chair and the election of Robert N. Compton,
Ph.D., of Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Dawneda F. Williams of Wise,
Va. as new trustees. The Board also approved an $18.5 bond
issue to fund the renovation of three campus buildings.
Culbreth, former director of the U.S. Labor Department's Office
of Administrative Appeals, has been a College trustee since
1985. She previously served on the board as an alumni-elected
trustee. Culbreth's career in service to Federal agencies and
the United States Senate also included positions as legal counsel
for the U.S. Senate, staff attorney for the Federal Trade Commission
and senior litigation attorney for the Tennessee Valley Authority.
A 1964 Berea alumni, Culbreth received the LL.B. from Vanderbilt
University in 1967. She lives in Arlington, Va. and Waynesville,
N.C. with her husband, attorney John Vanderstar. Culbreth succeeds
Elton White, retired president of NCR Corporation and chair
of Berea's Board since 1997, who will continue as a member
of the Board of Trustees.

Robert Compton is a professor of chemistry and physics at the
University of Tennessee. He was a Senior Corporate Fellow at
the Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1962 to 1996. He also
is co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Comstock, Inc.,
a U.S. manufacturer with world-wide sales of scientific instrumentation.
The Metropolis, Ill. native received his bachelor's degree
in physics from Berea College in 1960, an M.S. from the University
of Florida and his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee.
He has been an active alum both with the Berea physics department
and through involvement in the Knoxville/Oak Ridge Chapter
of the Alumni Association. Compton and his wife, Milinda Byrd
Compton, a former Berea student and graduate of the University
of Tennessee and member of Berea's Alumni Executive Council,
reside in Oak Ridge. They have four grown children.

Dawneda William, new trustee.
Dawneda Williams is Executive Director of the B.F. Foundation
and Director of the Regional Board of Junior Achievement of
Tri-Cities Tennessee/Virginia. She also is co-owner of Fowler
Enterprises. She is a founding and current trustee of the Appalachian
School of Law in Grundy, Va. and has provided leadership to
boards of several other schools and organizations. Williams
earned her B.A. from the University of North Carolina in 1962,
and
her M.A. from the University of Virginia. She and her husband
S. Hoyt Williams, Jr., founder and owner of MECA Engineering,
Kingsport, Tenn., live in Wise.
Compton and Wise will assume their six-year terms beginning
with the Board's
October 2002 meeting.
The $18.5 million bond issue will fund the renovations of
Presser Hall music building ($7,737,600); Talcott Residence
Hall ($4,550,000), and Lincoln Hall administration building
($5,537,500.). Work on Lincoln Hall, in progress, is expected
to be completed by Spring 2003. Presser and Talcott Renovations
will begin this month with completion estimated for summer
2003.
