Students receive Awards for Outstanding Service

Twenty-two students were recently recognized for outstanding service at the 2002 Service Awards convocation sponsored by the Campus Christian Center and the Center for Excellence in Learning Through Service (CELTS).


The E.R. Brann Good Citizenship Award, presented to the student judged to have contributed most to the Christian character of the campus, was awarded to senior Deborah Payne of Berea.

The Emily G. Graham Volunteer Service Award recipients were sophomores Jessica Carr, Joelton, Tenn., and Rachel A. Silver, Kingsport, Tenn, who have demonstrated exceptional service throughout the academic year.

The Lucille Christian and George McKinney Student Alumni Relations Council Award went to senior Jacqueline S. Price, Tamassee, S.C., for volunteer service in the community.

Sharing the Navy V-12 Award for their efforts to promote international understanding were seniors Phuntsok Dolma, Tibet, and Mary Lynch, Hendersonville, N.C.

The Layman Memorial Scholarship went to junior Esther Martinez, Spruce Pine, N.C., for her likeliness to contribute to international relations.

Junior Faye Tewksbury, Edmonton, Ky., was presented the Joe Van Pelt Agricultural Leadership Award for concern for social problems.

The Louise Veltin Memorial Award for Good Citizenship went to senior Tifanie R. McMillan, Cincinnati, Ohio, for all-around good citizenship.

Seniors Andrea Lowery, Paducah, Ky., and James B. Hartzog, Jefferson, N.C were awarded the Dr. Lee Wickline Scholarship for activities in support of universal human values.

Winners of the Homer E. Williams Award for Campus Leadership in Interracial Understanding were senior Tabitha L. Thomas, Somerset, Ky., and junior Gabrielle L. McWhorter, Birmingham, Ala.

Jeremy A. McShan, a freshman from Northport, Ala. was awarded the Jane Osborne Music Award for outstanding contribution to Christian worship on campus and in a church through sacred music.

Recipients of awards sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Learning Through Service (CELTS) included a Service Scholarship to junior Bobbie Jo Berry, Denton, Ky. and Julia Drukker Stammer Appalachian Volunteer Awards to seniors Rachel E. Ballard, Alderson, W.Va.; Nita Hanna, Newport, Tenn.; Krista Keith, Berea; Trenna Krenlein, Jasper, Ind.; Misty M. Penn, Corinth, Ky., and Corey T. Russell, Graysville, Ala.
