Berean Hasan Davis' performance as A.A. Burleigh, an African
American Union soldier stationed at Camp Nelson and the first
adult African American to attend Berea College following the
Civil War, will be aired this Saturday at 8:30 p.m. on KET's "Kentucky
Life" program. Davis researched and co-wrote the monologue
with Dreama Gentry, director of Berea College's Office of Special
Programs. He has performed it all over state as a part of the
Kentucky Humanities Council's Chautauqua series.

This is one of the few available photos of Burleigh, who became
a highly respected teacher and minister. He served two terms as
chaplain of the Illinois State Senate.
"Kentucky Life" a weekly half-hour program hosted
by Dave Shuffett, explores stories that capture the flavor,
history and heritage of Kentucky.
Davis, who lives in Berea, is a 1992 graduate of Berea College
and the University of Kentucky College of Law. Through his
business "Empowerment Solutions" he is a motivational
speaking working with youth in schools, community agencies
and juvenile facilities. He also is chair of the Governor's
Juvenile Justice Advisory Council for Kentucky. In his spare
time he is a professional storyteller, performance artist and
poet. His current portrayal in the KHC Kentucky Chatauqua program
is "York," a slave and the only African American
on Lewis and Clark's cross-country expedition.

Hasan Davis, '92, snaps a salute during a performance of his
one-man show based on the life of A. A. Burleigh. The Civil
War sergeant was Berea's firtst adult black male student.
