| Registration for the Spring 2002, Westervelt classes at Berea
College will begin at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2002.
The Westervelt program was developed to provide area residents
with the woodworking facilities and instruction to create items
that are both useful and decorative. Classes offered during
the Spring 2002 will focus on making musical instruments.
Participants in the can choose classes on making a five-string
folk banjo, a spruce top hourglass dulcimer, or a Celtic folk
harp. Class enrollment will be limited to 16. Dr. James L.
Yount, a professor in technology and industrial arts at Berea
College, will be the instructor for all of the classes. To
register, please call Sandy Wells at 985-3033.
Westervelt programs began at Berea College in 1936 with the
building of a cottage financed by E. C. Westervelt of Texas.
A Westervelt shop was later opened to students and faculty
interested in learning how to make metal and wooden objects,
either as a craft or just as a hobby. The Westervelt programs
today are offered both to campus and community residents through
the Berea College Technology and Industrial Arts Department.
