| Dr. Dean Warren Lambert, 75, a retired professor of history
and political science, and former chairman of the history department
at Berea College, passed away today at Berea Hospital. Lambert
was a specialist on Russian history and the U. S. Civil War.
Lambert's book, When the Ripe Pears Fell, The Battle of Richmond,
Kentucky, was published by the Madison County Historical Society
in 1996, providing a comprehensive narrative of the Civil War
battle which took place near Richmond on August 30, 1862.
Lambert, a native of Fairfax, South Dakota, graduated from
Berea College in 1948. He joined the Berea College faculty
in 1953 as an instructor in Social Studies at the Foundation
School. He later taught history and political science at the
college level from 1963 through his retirement in 1999. In
1992, Lambert was awarded the Seabury Award for Excellence
in Teaching, Berea College's highest award for faculty. Lambert
also received the Berea College Alumni Association Award of
Special Merit in 1994.
Lambert earned his Masters and doctoral degrees from the University
of Kentucky in 1957 and 1974, respectively. A U. S. Army veteran,
(1950-52) Lambert served as a secretary to the U. S. Representative
Francis H. Case of South Dakota (1948-49). He was associate
editor of The Berea Citizen (1952-53).
Dr. Lambert was a member of and held major offices in many
historical societies and organizations. He was active in the
Kentucky Civil War Round Table. He was a member of the American
Association of University Professors, a past president of the
Berea Chapter of the American Red Cross, and former commander
of the Cleveland Frost American Legion Post. Lambert served
as Police Judge ProTem for the City of Berea, dean of instruction
for the American Legion's Bluegrass Boys' State and was a moderator
of the Church of Christ, Union in Berea.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Lakes Funeral Home,
Berea.
