| The Raymond E. Mason Foundation of Columbus, Ohio has awarded
Berea College a grant of $30,000 to improve its service to
the Appalachian region. The grant to Berea supports summer
entrepreneurial internships, a part of the College’s
new and innovative educational and service outreach program,
Entrepreneurship for the Public Good (EPG).
The EPG program, designed to help improve the economy of Appalachia,
requires a two-summer commitment by Berea students. During
the first summer, students will take part in an intensive eight-week
seminar focused on creative problem solving, leadership development,
business feasibility research, and business plan writing. In
the second summer, these students will apply their acquired
skills as they serve in internships with small Appalachian
businesses or non-profit organizations. While Berea students
gain practical experience by assisting often-struggling businesses
and agencies, the agencies will profit from the students’ innovative
ideas.
Through its grant program, the Mason Foundation encourages
institutions of higher education to develop educational programs
that emphasize practical application for students, especially
those who are employed or enrolled in work-related educational
programs.
