The Berea College men's cross-country team won the combined
KIAC and NAIA regional championship meet this past Friday with
a score of 52 points, qualifying for the NAIA National meet
November 17 at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha.
At Friday's meet, held at Johnson City, Tenn., five members
of the men's team finished in the top fourteen places in
the 8,000 meter race, and six were named All-Conference.
Lucian Musgrove, a junior from Pine Knot, Ky. finished
fifth; Jamie Jimison of Sardinia, Ohio finished ninth; Matt
Schenka;
a freshman from Renssalaer, Indiana placed eleventh; Stephen
Hogan, a freshman from Nitro, W. Va., placed thirteenth;
and Paul Kiptoo from Nairobi, Kenya was fourteenth. Also,
representing Berea at the National Championship will be
Joseph Kimeu from Nairobi, Kenya and Roy Jones of Adolphus,
Ky.
In the women's competition, Berea placed second in the Conference
and fourth in the Region. Izabel Luckiewicz qualified for the
National competition by winning the Regional/Conference.
Berea College Cross-Country Coach Mike Johnson has received
his 30th Coach of the Year Award.
Johnson received his most recent coaching honor from the Kentucky
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) and the Region XII
competition. The Berea College Men’s cross-country team
ended their season with a record of 53 wins and 23 losses.
All but two of Johnson's Coach of the Year honors are in men's
track and cross country and women's cross country. He won coaching
honors twice for swimming and received his first coaching recognition
in 1981.
Since joining Berea in 1979, Johnson also has produced 22
All-Americans in track and cross-country.
