| Gwyn Hyman Rubio, author of "Icy Sparks", an Oprah
Book Club selection, will discuss her recent novel about a
young girl growing up in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky
during the 1950s at the next Berea Forum on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
The 4-5 p.m. program is scheduled in the 2nd Floor Conference
Room of the Bruce Building on the Berea College campus.
Rubio will share her insights about the writing of "Icy
Sparks" and the whirlwind experience of being featured
on Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club. In addition to the success
of her novel, the Berea author has had short fiction published
in literary journals and anthologies, and her writing has been
awarded grants from the Kentucky Arts Council and the Kentucky
Foundation for Women.
Berea Forum programs are free and open to the public. Meeting
times are regularly the second Tuesday every month (unless
otherwise noted), from 4 - 5 p.m., and are planned by a committee
of retired persons with staff assistance provided by Berea
College’s Office of Special Programs. Parking is available
around the Bruce Building, the Nursing Building Parking Lot
and also behind Boone Tavern, in addition to near-by on-street
parking. An elevator is accessible through the Appalachian
Center in the Bruce Building.
