| A senior vice president of Lowe's Companies and two other
outstanding alumni will be honored along with two long-time
friends of the College during Berea's "Homecoming Odyssey
2001" activities Nov. 16-18.
Dr. David E. Shelton, '69, will receive the College's Distinguished
Alumnus Award. Senior Vice President of Real Estate, Engineering
and Construction for Lowe's since 1997, Shelton is responsible
for all aspects of the company's expansion program. He began
his career with the company in 1970 and held several management
positions prior to assuming his present executive role. A member
of the College's Board of Trustees since 1999, Shelton is a
former member of Berea's President's Advisory Council. The
Stokes County, N.C. native earned masters and doctorate degrees
from the University North Carolina-Greensboro, and currently
resides in Wilkesboro, N.C.
Dr. Willie J. Parker, '86, chief of maternal and child health
services with the California Department of Health Services
in Sacramento, Calif., will receive the Outstanding Young Alumnus
Award. The Birmingham, Ala. native is the current president
of the Berea College Alumni Association. In addition to a B.S.
from Berea, he earned a masters degree in public health from
Harvard University and received his medical degree from the
University of Iowa College of Medicine.
Honored with the Rodney C. Bussey Alumni Award of Special
Merit will be Dr. Donald Hudson, '65, professor of technology
and industrial arts at Berea. A member of Berea's faculty since
1965, Hudson has been the recipient of several College awards,
including the Seabury Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1998,
Berea highest faculty honor. Hudson earned a masters degree
from Eastern Kentucky University and a doctorate from the University
of Missouri. Charles and Annette Tinnin of Hendersonville,
N.C., and formerly of Berea, will be named Honorary Alumni.
Shelton and Parker will receive their awards at the Alumni
Banquet scheduled for Friday, Nov. 16 at 6 p.m. in the Boone
Tavern Dining Room. On Saturday morning, Hudson will be honored
at the Technology and Industrial Arts Breakfast at 9 a.m. in
the Danforth Industrial Arts Bldg., and the Tinnins will be
presented their awards at the Alumni Coffee on Saturday morning.
Also on Friday will be the Black Student Union Homecoming
Pageant from 7-9:30 in Gray Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for
students and $10 for all others.
The College's Theatre Laboratory production of Aeschylus' "The
Oresteia," adapted and directed by Life Blumberg, ' 02,
will be performed at 8 p.m. in the Jelkyl Drama Center's McGaw
Theatre on Friday and Saturday evenings. Tickets are $5 (Berea
students are free) and can be reserved at the box office by

On Saturday morning, the Alumni Coffee is scheduled for 9:30
in Baird Lounge. Honorary Alumnus Awards will be presented
at 10.
A parade down Chestnut St. will begin at 11 a.m. (cancelled
if raining). Starting at 10:15 a.m., balloons, face painting
and a magic show will be offered in front of the Alumni Building
and Fairchild Hall. Rain site is the Alumni Building TV Lounge.
At noon, Reunion lunches are scheduled for the classes of
'81, '86, '91, '96' and '01.
A host of activities is scheduled for Saturday afternoon,
including the Black Music Ensemble fall concert in Union Church
at 1:30 p.m.; Dr. Gordon Ross, Hon. '69, Skittles Tournament
at the Log House Craft Gallery, 1-3 p.m., and Weatherford Planetarium
shows at 1 and 3 p.m.
Seabury Center will be the site of three basketball games
on Saturday. At 7:30 p.m., the Men's Varsity team will play
Spalding University, with the Coronation of Homecoming queen
and king taking place at halftime. Earlier, the Berea Women's
Varsity team will play Alice Lloyd College at 2 p.m. and at
5:15 the Alumni, coached by Paul Atkinson, '76, and Craig Jefferson,
'80, will challenge the Men's Junior Varsity team.
All day Saturday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., and on Sunday, 1 - 4 p.m.,
Berea College Crafts will be holding its Annual Holiday Sale
at the Berea Folk Center on Jefferson Street.
Festivities on Saturday conclude with a Student/Alumni Reception
in Baird Lounge and the Homecoming Dance for students and alumni
in the Woods-Penniman Commons Area. Both events are scheduled
for 9 p.m. - 1 a.m.
On Sunday morning, Rev. Lisa Caldwell-Reiss, '91, will lead
an Alumni Worship Service in Union Church at 10:45, featuring
a performance by the Alumni Concert Choir.
Tickets are required for the Alumni Banquet on Friday and
for Saturday's luncheons and Men's Varsity Basketball game.
