The 2nd Annual Appalachian Film Series at Berea College continues
Monday, Oct. 8 with showings of “Buffalo Creek Flood” and “Buffalo
Creek Revisited.”
Scheduled at 6:30 p.m. in the basement of Union Church, the
event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will
be provided. The series is sponsored by Berea College’s
Appalachian Center and CELTS.
“Buffalo Creek Flood” is the story of the February
26, 1972 disaster created when a coal-waste dam owned by the
Pittston Company collapsed at the head of a crowded hollow in
southern West Virginia, killing 125 people and leaving 4,000
homeless. Interviews with survivors, representatives of union
and citizen’s groups and Pittston Company officials are
juxtaposed with actual footage of the flood and scenes of the
ensuing devastation. “Buffalo Creek Revisited” looks
at the situation in the affected area ten years later.
Upcoming films in the series are “Nature’s Way” and “Catfish:
Man of the Woods,” Nov. 12; and "Stranger with a Camera,” Dec.
10. For additional information, contact Lori Briscoe, Appalachian
Center associate director, at 859-985-3140.
