| The Rev. Joanna Adams, senior pastor of Trinity Presbyterian
Church in Atlanta, the country's largest Presbyterian USA church
to have a woman as senior pastor, will be guest minister for
Berea College's "Accent on Christian Faith" week
activities Sept. 25-27. This year's theme is "Key Questions
of Faith."
Sponsored by the College's Campus Christian Center, all activities
are free of charge and the public is invited to attend.
At 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27, in Phelps Stokes-Chapel, Rev.
Adams will speak on "Are Science and Religion Destined
to be Enemies?" Following the program, a reception is
scheduled in the Phelps-Stokes Green Room.
Sept. 25-27, Rev. Adams will lead noon worship services in
Cowan Chapel of Union Church, addressing the questions "How
Big is God's Love?" on Tuesday; "Should I Give Satan
a Second Thought?" on Wednesday, and "What Happens
When the Spirit Says No?" on Thursday. Each service will
be followed by a sandwich buffet and dialogue at 12:30 in the
Union Church Fellowship Hall.
An Atlanta native, Rev. Adams has been senior pastor at Trinity
for the last ten years. Organized in 1949, and with a current
membership of over 2,000, Trinity Church was named in a 2001
nationwide study funded by the Lilly Endowment as one of America's "most
outstanding Protestant Churches."
In addition to her duties at Trinity, Rev. Adams is also active
on several boards and local organizations. Currently, she is
chair of the Board of Trustees of Columbia Theological Seminary;
a member of the Executive Committee of the Covenant Network
of Presbyterians, and the Board of Visitors of Emory University,
among others.
Nationally recognized for her preaching and writing skills,
Rev. Adams also has received a Community Action Award by the
National Council of Jewish Women and awarded an honorary doctorate
by Davidson College. Twice she has been preacher for the General
Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA and the Protestant
Hour, preacher for the Chautaugua Institution, and for several
other national gatherings.
Rev. Adams' undergraduate study was at Emory University and
her graduate study at Columbia Theological Seminary. She and
her husband Alfred B. Adams III, an attorney, have a daughter,
a son and a granddaughter.
