James E. Nevels, founder and CEO of The Swarthmore Group, an
independent investment advisory firm in West Chester, Pa., and
Ann Jones Bowling, director of the Bowling Family Foundation,
have been elected to the Berea College Board of Trustees.
Each was appointed to a six-year term and will serve through
2007.
Nevels has 20 years of experience in the securities and investment
industry.

Since founding The Swarthmore Group in 1992, the firm has grown
to become the eighth-largest minority-owned investment advisory
firm in the U.S., currently managing approximately $ 1 billion
in assets. From 1984 to 1991 Nevels was employed by Prudential-Bache
Securities, where he was vice president, and by Smith Barney,
Harris Upham and Co., Inc. He practiced law from 1978-84 as counsel
in bond transactions with the Philadelphia law firm of Ballard,
Spahr, Andrews and Ingersoll. He also is the author of a book
on college and university financing.
A Greensboro, Ala. native, Nevels holds an A.B. in political
science and philosophy from Bucknell University, an M.A. from
the University of Pennsylvania and a
J.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Law.
He is a former member of the Bucknell University Board of Trustees,
and also has served on the board of directors for the Ports of
Philadelphia and Camden, Inc., and the Pennsylvania State Employees'
Retirement System, among other civic activities.
Ann Bowling, along with her late husband James Bowling, a Berea
College trustee from 1968-1997, has been a long-time supporter
of the College. She has directed the Bowling Family Foundation
since 1997, and also is active in numerous charities and churches
as a volunteer and board member.
