The contributions, presented recently by Jeffrey G. Eisenbarth,
College Vice
President for Business and Administration, are in lieu of taxes
that would have been paid on College property at the I-75 and
Kentucky 595 interchange and along Walnut Meadow Pike.
The College owns some 35 acres of land in that area and because
of its tax
exempt status, the College is not required to pay tax on the
properties.
However, the College voluntarily makes annual contributions to
provide
assistance to city and county organizations.
The recipients and the amounts received are: City of Berea,
$800; Madison
County Schools, $10,700; Madison County Fiscal Court, $800; Madison
County Public Library, $800; Madison County Health Department,
$500; Madison County Emergency Medical Service, $1,400, and Madison
County Extension District Board, $400.
Berea College also contributes $15,000 to the City of Berea
annually to be used for cooperative projects between the City
and the College such as the expansion of the Parks and Recreation
space.
