Reunion Activities Set for June 8-10

Three alumni and a former campus minister will be honored during summer reunion activities at Berea College scheduled June 8-10.

The Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumnus Award will be presented to 1968 graduate Eddie Kennedy. A teacher for more than 30 years at Berea Community High School, Kennedy has been active on many levels of school and community theatre as producer, director and award-winning playwright. The award will be presented at Saturday's Banquet in Old Seabury Gym in the Seabury Center, scheduled at 6 p.m.

Dr. Paul David Nelson, a 1965 graduate, will receive the Rodney C. Bussey Award of Special Merit. Nelson, Julian Van-Dusen Professor of American History at Berea, has been a member of the faculty since 1970 and also serves as chair of the history department. The author of seven books and numerous of publications, he holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University. 1943 graduate and Berea resident Virginia Ferrill Piland will receive the Alumni Loyalty Award and Rev. Lee Morris, who retired last year after 21 years of service as a campus minister, will receive the Honorary Alumnus Award. Piland, a retired public school teacher is a quilt artist whose works have been exhibited in Austria, English and Singapore as well as in the U.S.

Morris, who holds a Ph.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, was active in many aspects of campus life at Berea, including Habitat for Humanity, the Campus Christian Council and various alumni association events. All three awards will be made at the 10 a.m. Alumni Coffee in Baird Lounge of the Alumni Building.

"Virginia's Works: Three Generations in the Making," quilt works by Piland,
will be on exhibit in the main foyer of the Woods-Penniman Building during the reunion, in cases at the entrance to the International Center and Black Cultural Centers.

The weekend's activities will begin Friday evening with a 5 p.m. Chimes concert followed by a reception and picnic at 6 p.m. on the front lawn of the
Woods-Penniman Building. The site in case of rain will be the Woods-Penn
Commons.

At a Saturday luncheon, members of the class of 1951 will be inducted into the Charles T. Morgan Society in recognition of their 50th reunion and on Saturday morning President Larry Shinn and Mrs. Nancy Shinn will host a reunion breakfast for the group. On Friday evening members of the class of 1946 will gather at the home of Lt. Col. John and Mary K. Fielder Kauffman.

The alumni association will also be honoring the classes of 1936, '41, '46, '51,'56, '61, '66, '71 and the Dana I Aggies.

Reunion activities will conclude with a Sunday morning worship service at Union Church, led by Rev. Mark Boes, 1976 alumnus.
