| Berea College's new 56-bell carillon will be featured in a
series of three Sunday evening concerts during the month of
May. All of the concerts will feature internationally renowned
carillonneurs. Concerts will begin at 7:00 p.m. and last about
an hour.
The concerts will be the last opportunity to hear the carillon,
located in the tower of the Draper Building, for fifteen months.
The carillon will be silent during renovation of Draper, the
College's main teaching/learning facility, scheduled to begin
the end of May.
The concert schedule is:
Sun., May 6 - John Courter, Berea College Carillonneur
Sun., May 13 - Karel Keldermans, Carillonneur of Washington Park, Springfield,
IIlinois and former President of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America.
Sun., May 20 - Milford Myhre, Carillonneur of Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales,
Florida, and former President of the World Carillon Federation
Berea's carillon is located in the top of the Draper Tower
on the College quadrangle. Concert-goers are invited to bring
lawn chairs or a blanket; programs will be available at the
front of the Draper Building. The best place to listen is from
a distance of 150 to 350 feet from the tower, but people are
encouraged to walk around to find the place that best suits
them. Many find that the sound is best when one can see sound
openings from two sides of the tower.
Listeners can expect to hear arrangements of folksongs and
spiritual songs as well as familiar classicsand original
works written for the carillon on the concert programs.
