Berea College senior Gina Fugate, an English education major
from Dayton, Ohio, was featured in an article in the Jan./Feb.
issue of "Biblical Archeology Review (BAR)." Fugate,
who wrote about her experience on an archeological dig in Israel,
was one of only eight students nation-wide to receive $1,000
BAR Scholarships for participation in archeological projects
around the world.
Fugate was also the recipient of a $1,000 John B. Stephenson
Non-Western Study Award from Berea College. The funds allowed
Fugate to spend three weeks doing archeological excavation
at the ancient city of Ashkelon, under the direction of Dr.
Lawrence E. Stager of Harvard University. Located on Israel's
Mediterranean coast near the present city of Tel Aviv, Ashkelon
was a major seaport of the Caananites and Phillistines from
3000 - 604 B.C. and continued to be occupied through the period
of the Crusades.
More about Fugate's experience is available at the Biblical
Archeology Society's web site at http://www.bib-arch.org/barjf01/digs-c.html
