| Harold L. Moses, M.D., noted cancer researcher and director
of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center at Vanderbilt University;
Glenn R. Fuhrman, co-founder of the New York investment company
MSD Capital, and David E Shelton, a senior vice president with
Lowe’s Companies, Inc., have been elected to the Berea
College Board of Trustees.
Each was appointed to a six- year term and will serve through
2006. Moses has spent more than 35 years as a distinguished
physician and researcher engaged in the "war on cancer." As
well as being Founding Director of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer
Center since 1988, he also is chairman of the department of
cell biology in Vanderbilt’s medical school. Prior to
joining Vanderbilt’s program, he was employed at the
Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The recipient of numerous awards,
his research has affected the way cancer is being studied and
treated around the world.
A native of Whitley County, where his father was coal miner,
Moses graduated from Berea College in 1958. He received his
medical degree from Vanderbilt and later specialized in pathology
in his medical studies. In 1995, he received an "Outstanding
Alumni of Kentucky Award" from Kentucky Advocates for
Higher Education.
Fuhrman was the founding principal of MSD Capital, formed
in 1998. The firm currently manages more than $4 billion in
assets, including significant investments in technology. Previously,
he was a managing director and head of the Special Investments
Group at The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc., where he was employed
from 1988-98. He is a graduate of the Wharton School at the
University of Pennsylvania, where he earned both his M.B.A.
and bachelor's degree, majoring in both finance and art.
Shelton has been Senior Vice President of Real Estate, Engineering
and Construction for Lowe's since 1997, and is responsible
for all aspects of the company's expansion program. He began
his career with the company in 1970, working as a part-time
employee while attending graduate school, and held several
management positions prior to assuming his present executive
role.
The Stokes County, N.C. native is a 1969 graduate of Berea
and earned masters and doctorate degrees from the University
North Carolina- Greensboro. He has been an active Berea alumnus,
and is a former member of the Berea College President's Advisory
Council.
