Berea College's Students for Appalachian (SFA) hopes to collect
nearly five tons of food for the Berea Community Food Bank
next week during the Eighth Annual Hunger Hurts Food Drive.
The service organization is sponsor for the drive, which begins
October 22.
Supplies at the Food Bank are very low, according to the facility's
administrator, Sister Anne Regina Lannon. More than 325 families
in southern Madison County were served last year by the Food
Bank, including many poor working families, and the demand
is expected to be even greater this year, said Lannon. Donations
to the food drive will provide Thanksgiving dinner to families
in need and stock the pantry for winter.
From Monday through Thursday, teams of volunteers will distribute
grocery bags to homes throughout the community. Residents are
asked to fill the bags with non-perishable food items and leave
them on their doorsteps for pick-up on Saturday, Oct. 28, by
9 a.m. Food items most needed are hot and cold cereals, pasta,
soup, canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, ramen noodles,
flour, rice, canned milk, baby foods, canned meats, tuna, boxed
macaroni and cheese, dried beans and legumes. Items which should
not be included are canned beets, sauerkraut, pumpkin, hominy
and pie fillings.
Volunteers, especially teams of three or more with a vehicle
and driver, are needed to distribute bags Oct. 22-25. Those
who can help with this effort should come to the Students for
Appalachia office in the Bruce Building anytime between 8 a.m.
and 5 p.m.
The October 28 pick-up day on Saturday will begin at 8:30
in the Commons of the Woods-Penniman Building. Transportation
will be provided from there to the Food Bank, where volunteers
will work with a pick-up team.
To volunteer, call (859)985-3935 and ask for Sheila or Betty.
