Latin American Folk Music Ensemble to Perform

10/10/00

Tlen-Huicani, a folk music ensemble from the Mexican state of Veracruz, will perform at Berea College's Phelps Stokes Chapel at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6.

The performance is the first Stephenson Memorial Concert of 2000-01.
Founded in 1973, Tlen-Huicani (meaning "the singers" in the Mayan language of Nahuatl) is considered one of the most faithful interpreters of the traditional folk music of their native region and other parts of Latin America.

The centerpiece of the ensemble's music is the "harpa jarocha" or folk harp, a widely-played instrument in Veracruz as well as in many other Latin American countries. Maestro Alberto de le Rosa, among the finest folk harpists in the world, directs the five-piece ensemble.

The repertoire of Tlen-Huicani has developed during their tours throughout Central and South America. In addition to the folk traditions of Veracruz, the ensemble's music reflects the techniques of popular artists and regions of Peru, Colombia, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador and other countries.

Tlen-Huicani has toured internationally and played music for the "Ballet
Folklorico de la Universidad Veracruzana;" composed, performed and recorded music for theatre productions, performed at major colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and at music festivals and on television world-wide. The group also has recorded15 LP's and three CD's, released world-wide. Additional information on Tlen-Huicani can be found at www.sroartists.com.

The Stephenson Memorial Concert Series honors the late John B. Stephenson, president of Berea College from 1984-94 and his sister Nancy Anne Stephenson, a pianist. The programs in the series reflect Nancy Stephenson's interests in the piano as a solo and ensemble instrument, and John Stephenson's in traditional world and ethnic music and dance that foster an understanding of diverse cultural traditions, in contemporary themes that expand an awareness of frontiers, and in the exploration of a sense of place.
The performance is free and open to the public.
