Classes and work will be canceled on Wednesday, Oct. 4, as Berea
College observes its 125th annual Mountain Day.
Students, faculty and staff will hike, relax and enjoy the mountain
trails in the College forest and participate in a variety of celebration
events.
Activities will get under way at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Mountain Day
Eve, with the 24th annual pops concert by the Berea College Band
in Woods-Penniman Commons. Conducted by John Little, the free program
will include light classical, jazz and pop selections played by
the Band's Wind and Jazz Ensembles. .
Concert-goers are invited to bring snacks, relax to the band's
easy-listening music, and enjoy the view of the mountains from
the commons area. Food and drinks also can be purchased at the
Crossroads Cafe in Woods-Penn.
Admission to the concert is free and open to the public.
On Wednesday, shuttles to Indian Fort Theatre and back, sponsored
by Campus Activities, will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through
3 p.m., leaving from the Alumni Building circle. At 10 a.m., the
Black Cultural Center will begin its sponsored hike, and all e
invited to take part. Hiking by all groups will be permitted only
until dark. A new College Forestry department policy prohibiting
evening use of the forest is now in effect to reduce the danger
of forest fires.
A barbeque lunch will be served at Indian Fort Theatre from 11
a.m. - 1:15 p.m. Meal tickets for non-boarders are $5 and are available
from Berea Dining Services or can be purchased on site Wednesday.
(Lunch will not be served in Dining Services).
Following lunch, "Crazy Olympics," sponsored by College
Intramurals, Aero and the Wellness Program will be offered from
1-3 p.m.
In the event of rain, activities will be moved into the Alumni
and Woods-Penn Buildings.
