Teaching appointments for twenty-seven new Berea College faculty members have
been announced by Dr. Steve Boyce, academic vice president and provost.
Two faculty members will have both teaching and administrative responsibilities.
James R. Maxwell, newly appointed professor of business holding the William
and Kay Moore Chair of Entrepreneurship and Management, will teach half-time
in the economics and business department. He also will be director of the Entrepreneurship
for the Public Good program, a half-time position based in the College’s
Appalachian Center. Maxwell holds a B.S. from Maryville University, and M.B.A.
and Ph.D. degrees from Webster University.
Meta Mendel-Reyes will divide her time between teaching as associate professor
in the general studies program and serving as director of service learning
and of the new Center for Excellence in Learning Through Service (CELTS). She
has a B.A. from the University of California-Santa Cruz and holds an M.A. and
Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley.
Joining the faculty as full-time assistant professors are Sarah Blank, biology,
B.S. Northern Kentucky; Lori Brooks, history, B.A. Oberlin College and M.A.
Yale University; Winston Gittens, education, B.A. University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez
Campus and M.A. Miami University; Robert Powers, mathematics, B.S. Concord
College and M.S. and Ph.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University;
and Hua (John) Zhang, art, B.A. equivalent, Hangzhou University and M.A. University
of Cincinnati.
Francie Bauer is new reference librarian and assistant professor of library
science. She holds a B.A. from Morehead State University, M.A. from Duquesne
University and M.L.S. from the University of Maryland.

New Zealand; Daniel Vazzana, economics and general studies, B.A. Loyola (Md.)
College and M.S. Purdue University, and Lih-Ing (Lynn) Wu, mathematics, B.S.
National Taiwan University and M.S. National Tsing Hua University. Appointed
instructor in general studies is Randall Roberts, B.A. Northern Kentucky University
and M.A. University of Kentucky.
New part-time faculty for 2000-01 are Michiko Kwak, assistant professor of
