Dr. Diane White, composer, musical performer, teacher and public
speaker, will be guest minister for Berea College's "Accent
on Christian Faith" week activities Sept. 19-21. This year's
theme is "The Liberating Power of God's Love."
At 3 p.m.,Thursday, Sept. 21, White will speak on "The Power
of God's Love to Set Us Free to Reach Our Fullest Potential" in
Phelps Stokes Chapel. White also will conduct a 150-voice choir
who will perform two of her gospel compositions. She also will
be a featured vocalist and accompany the ensemble on the piano
for the performances.
The three College music organizations that will make up the mass
choir for this special performance are the Concert Choir, Black
Music Ensemble and Women's Chorus. A reception will follow in the
Phelps Stokes Green Room.
At noon on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 19-21, White
will lead three worship services in Danforth Chapel, speaking on "The
Power of God's Love to Set Us Free from Pride;" "The
Power of God's Love to Set Us Free from Materialism" and "The
Power of God's Love to Set Us Free from Low Self-Esteem"
Each service will begin at noon, and be followed by a sandwich
buffet and dialogue at 12:30 in the adjacent Fireside Room.
White has held a variety of university, church and community positions,
including assistant to the director of African and African-American
Studies at Washington University; musical director for the St.
Louis Black Repertory Theatre Company, and assistant director of
African-American student development as well as artist-in-residence
at Appalachian State University.
Since being called to the ministry in 1989, White has been a speaker
at churches, campuses and retreat centers. She has conducted seminars
and workshops on "Inner Healing;" "Building Self-Esteem;" "Racial
Reconciliation;" "Music in the African-American Church;" "Diversity
in Praise and Worship" and other topics.
In addition to being a workshop clinician, White also has extensive
experience as a gospel and classical vocalist and pianist. She
currently is artist-in-residence at the First United Methodist
Church in Santa Barbara, Calif.
A native of Washington, D.C., White holds a BA in music from
Washington University, and a masters and Ph.D. in music composition
from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
A member of a musical family, Dr. White is the sister of Dr. Kathy
Bullock, director of the Black Music Ensemble, and associate professor
of music at Berea.
Accent on Christian Faith Week is sponsored by the College's Campus
Ministry and Campus Christian Council with support from the Ruth
Pister-Hampel Memorial Fund.
