A group of 46 weavers from all over the U.S. visited Berea
last Wednesday for an "insider" look at important
weaving collections in the city.
The Berea tour was one of several pre-conference trips arranged
as part of "Convergence," the bi-annual national
meeting of the Handweaver's Guild of America which met in Cincinnati
June 22-25.
Organizer of the tour was Philis Alvic, well-known Kentucky
weaver and weaving historian, who has researched extensively
early weavers in Berea and in Appalachia. The group viewed
two Berea College collections. Christopher Miller, director
of the Appalachian Center's artifacts and exhibits program,
displayed historic Appalachian and College-made weavings. In
the Art Department, Alvic showed the group a collection of
weavings made by former College student and instructor Harriet
Bright.
Other stops included Churchill Weavers and Berea College Weaving.
Ending the day's events was a tea in the Boone Tavern Oak Room
which included a showing of weavings made by Neil and Mary
Colmer.
