| Thirty-one public safety officers from colleges and universities
throughout Kentucky and surrounding states will study subjects
ranging from patrol techniques to workplace violence at a Public
Safety Officer Training Academy conducted at Berea College
June 11-16.
Sessions on Monday, Thursday and Friday will focus on topics
related to security and leadership, while the Tuesday and Wednesday
courses will provide instruction on safety and fire concerns
and procedures. Courses will cover basic skills as well as
the finer points of safety and security work, including issues
related to cultural diversity, sexual harassment and rape prevention.
Hands-on demonstrations and field practice will include putting
out fires, patrolling techniques on foot and on bicycle, handling
hazardous materials, checking buildings for safety and security
problems, among others.
Instructors for the week-long academy include faculty, staff
and public safety officials with Berea, Georgetown, Campbellsville
and Thomas More Colleges and from Transylvania and Eastern
Kentucky Universities.
This is the sixth public safety training academy offered by
Berea, which began the program in 1991. Approximately half
of this year's participants are from schools of higher education
in Kentucky while the others are from colleges and universities
in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and Ohio.
