Day 2000 events will be offered throughout April at Berea
College, beginning with a Madison County Road Clean-up Day on April 1
from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
HEAL and the Sustainability and
Environmental Studies (SENS) program are the two College sponsors of
Earth Day 2000 activities.
Events include opportunities for celebration as well as action to
increase sustainability of the College, the community and the region.
Co-sponsors for the road clean-up are Eastern Kentucky University
(EKU) and Madison County.
In Berea, Clean-Up Day volunteers will assemble at Union Church.
Groups will work in two-hour shifts every hour from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
and will be assigned a section of road selected by the county. Each
group will be provided with bags, reflective vests and gloves.
Recyclable materials will be taken to the College recycling center,
while bags of trash will be picked up by county crews. There will be
refreshments for all participants.
Additional Earth Day 2000 activities at Berea will include:
- April 8-9,
transportation to Y-12 Nuclear Weapons Plant, Oak Ridge,
Tenn. for a "Non-Violence Workshop" and "Direct Action for
Peace;"
- April 20, noon-2 p.m., Agriculture Bldg., "Solar
Workshop;"
- April 25, Habitat Creation and Restoration Project
at Cow Bell
Hollow in College Forest (College Labor Day project)
- April 29,
10 a.m., Union Church, "Critical Mass Bike Ride and
Rally to Protect Global Climate."
Transportation also will be provided for several events at Eastern
Kentucky University during the month.
