The
public is invited to attend a wall-raising ceremony to kick off
the first Berea College - Public Relationssponsored Habitat for
Humanity house
construction project on Monday, March 20, at 9:30 a.m
.
The $40,000 project was suggested by Madison County Habitat
chapter, Director Guy Patrick. Lee Morris, advisor for the Berea
College Habitat chapter, was active in promoting College sponsorship
of the activity.
The project was approved by the College's administration in Fall
'99. The four-bedroom, one-and-a-half bath ranch-style hous00000000000000000d
by the second week of May.
Students volunteering from Mary Washington College and the
University of Illinois will be working on the "pre-build" (foundation
and framing aspects of the project) during their Spring Break
vacations March 5-12 and March 13-19, respectively.
Berea students also will spend the better portion of their Spring
Break working on the house. The College's "Spring Break Build" is
scheduled March 20- 24, with the wall- raising ceremony beginning the
student-initiated week of work on-site.
During their break, Berea students are scheduled to work on
roofing, electrical, plumbing, heating, insulation, vinyl siding and
drywall aspects of the build. They will be on-site from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
each day.
As with any and all projects affiliated with Habitat for Humanity,
the public is invited to participate. Assistance can be given in the
form of monetary donations or manual labor.
To date, the College chapter has raised $30,000 from various
College constituents such as faculty and staff, retirees, alumni,
friends of the College, clubs and organizations and its student body.
