William Lafferty Jr., died Sept. 19, 1998. Elma Phillipson Cole died April 26. She was a member of several national agency boards and received several woman of the year recognitions. The "OTHERS" award, the highest honor given a civilian by the Salvation Army, was presented at the Army's National Conference of Social Work, just before her death.She worked for the Salvation Army after retiring at 65 years of age after 17 years of special projects. Ted Wright, former professor of mathematics, died Aug. 2, with a memorial service held at Union Church. He played on the first basketball team to compete at Seabury gym. He taught high school math and science in Bellevue, Ky. for 12 years prior to returning to Berea to teach in the Navy V-12 program. In 1945, he began teaching in the Foundation School, and in 1948 became a member of the Berea College faculty. He retired in 1974 after 31 years of service to Berea. He volunteered at Berea Hospital, served two terms on the Berea City Council and was a director at Berea Bank and Trust. In 1982 he received Berea’s Alumni Award of Special Merit. Dr. Arch B. Clark, A’37, retired physician, was presented the Community Service Award by the Kentucky Hospital Association. Clay Hospital Board of Directors since 1972, serving as chairman from 1995-1996. Oscar William Deyton, owner and operator of Deyton Farm Supply in Burnsville, N.C. died July 9. He served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was employed by the N.C. Agricultural Extension Service in Wilson and Mitchell Counties. He served Yancey County (N.C.) for 10 years as chairman of the Board of Commissioners and was serving on the Yancey County Farm Bureau Board of Directors and the First Union Bank Board. His volunteer service included membership in the North Carolina State University Agricultural Foundation, Yancey County Cooperative Extension Advisory Board, Yancey County Planning Board and the Yancey Public Library Board. Ethel Capps, Hon. ’77, died April 27, 1998. She was a retired director of Berea College Country Dancers and the Recreation Extension Program. She joined the faculty in 1958 as an associate professor of recreation in the department of Sociology and retired in 1978. She was a member of the National Education Association, the English Speaking Union, the Association of American University of Women and the Country Dance and Song Society of America.
