Eckford, ’03, is All American

Junior Jamie Eckford of Fort Knox, Ky. sprinted his way to the finals in three events at the NAIA National Track and Field Championships held in Olathe, Kan. May 23-25. He finished third in the 100 meter dash, with a time of 10.58. He also made the finals in the 200 meter dash, finishing seventh, and the 400 meter dash, finishing sixth. His performance earned him All-American status this year. Eckford also broke the Berea College 200 meter dash record of 21.71 at the Cumberland meet on April 13 with a time of 21.66.

Eckford wasn’t the only Berea representative at nationals. John Hockersmith IV, ’03, of Salvisa, Ky., finished 12th in the hammer throw with a heave of 154’4.” During the season, he had qualified with a throw of 160’6.” Hockersmith has been named an NAIA All America Scholar Athlete with a 3.73 GPA. Izabela Luckiewicz also competed at nationals in the 3,000 meter run.

The men’s relay teams broke several Berea College records this season, including three at the Berea Relays on April 20. The team of Marcus Vinson, ’05, Shane Gregory, ’05, Rico McCants, ’03, and Jamie Eckford broke the 4x100 meter relay record, with a time of 42.12, and the sprint medley relay record (two 100-meter runners, a 200 meter and a 400 meter), with a time of 1:33.04. Shane Gregory, ’05, joined Vinson, McCants, and Eckford to break the 4x200 meter record with a 1:29.89.

Snowden, Livingston Athletics Award Winners

Brandon Snowden, ’03, a business administration major from Jeffersonville, Ky., and member of the men’s basketball team, is the recipient of the fourth annual Roland R. Wierwille Athletic award. The annual award, given in honor of Berea head basketball coach Roland Wierwille, honors those students whose character reflects a sense of discipline, dedication and determination both on and off the athletic field.

Snowden has maintained an overall GPA of 3.78 out of a possible 4.0. This season, he was ranked 15th nationally and 2nd in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (KIAC) for individual rebounding.

Kathleen “Kate” Livingston, ’02, a business administration/marketing major from Portland, Ore., and member of the women’s soccer team, received the Minnie Maud Macauley Award. The annual award honors an outstanding female student athlete, and is given in honor of Macauley, who was instrumental in encouraging women’s athletics at Berea (see p. 18.)

In addition to four years as a soccer player, Livingston also played tennis and ran track for Berea. She was named an All-American National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Scholar-Athlete this year with a 3.9 GPA.

Returning Lady Mountaineers starter Andrea Amburgey, ’03, a 5’ 8” forward from Richmond, Ind., broke the Berea women’s basketball career rebounding record of 539 on Jan. 12 against Midway College. Unfortunately, she tore her ACL in the same game, and was lost for the season. She had already tied the school record for most rebounds in a game with 22 against Union College, a record that had stood since 1978. With that number, she also joined Berea’s elite 500 Rebound Club. “I didn’t know I was even close,” she says. She was also a member of the All Tournament team her freshman year and looks forward to returning strong in 2002-2003.

Scholar Athletes Recognized

Berea Baseball Team Breaks Win Record

With 19 wins against some tough competition, Berea College’s baseball team broke the old school record of 16 wins set in 1989. Led by seniors Victor Sizemore and Shane Vidovic, the team was only one victory away from making the KIAC regional tournament for the first time. After a hard-fought game, they were defeated in the conference final by eventual NAIA World Series competitors Spalding University.
Four Berea players made the All-Conference Team, including Todd Clanton, ’03, who made first team, and


Garrett Lange, ’03, Anthony Estep, ’05, and Dustin Ingram, ’05, who made second team. Clanton also tied the school record for runs scored in a season with 37.

Men’s Tennis Third in Conference

Berea’s tennis team finished third in the KIAC conference tournament. The team’s season record of 7-4 is the best in the last three years. “Our players improved, and were much more competitive” this year, says Coach Allen Jackson.

In tournament play, Jason Earlywine, ’04, won his singles matches against both Asbury and Bethel Colleges. He and Tom Bowen, ’03, joined to win their doubles match against Bethel. Bowen had two singles victories against Bethel as well. Josh Baldwin, ’05, won both of his singles matches, and, with Jason Travis, ’02, added a doubles win against Bethel. Joe Thorpe, ’02, won both singles and doubles matches, teamed with Tshering Dorjee, ’03.
