Hodson selected for Wierwille Award

Luke Hodson, ’02, a marketing major from Emmalena, Ky., and member of the men’s basketball team, is the recipient of the third annual Roland R. Wierwille Athletic award. The award honors those students whose character reflects a sense of discipline, dedication and determination both on and off the
athletic field.

Hodson has maintained an overall GPA of 3.25 out of a possible 4.0, and has been on the Dean’s List. He is involved in GEAR-UP, a program to encourage middle school students to attend college, and is a featured speaker at many of their events. Through high school and college he has served as asummer camp counselor at Camp Nathaniel, a non-denominational Christian camp in Emmalena.

Hodson has played on the basketball team since he was a freshman, and became a starter during his sophomore year. He was named to the 2000-01 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (KIAC) regular season All-Conference team, and was named to the All-Tournament team at the 2000 Berea Pepsi Classic tournament. He is the son of Roy and Debbie Hodson.

The annual Wierwille Award is given in honor of Roland Wierwille, head basketball coach at Berea. The award was initiated by a group of Berea College alumni.

Berea Baseball Team Shatters Nine Records


Chris Barton, '03

A young Berea College baseball team, coached by Todd Morris and Ryan Hess, shattered 9 out of 14 all-time team season offensive records. These records included the team average (.308), doubles (60), and runs batted in (201). Several team members broke individual season records, including Chris Barton, ’03, with 69 total bases, and Peter Branscomb, ’04, with a season batting average of .422. Branscomb, Brandon Fenton, ’03, Shane Vidovic, ’02, and Victor Sizemore, ’02, were named to the
All-Conference team. Tim Rogers, ’02, was named to the KIAC Academic All-Conference Team, and was an NAIA Academic All-American.

The Mountaineers finished their season 11-20, winning seven of their last eleven games, thanks to several members batting above .300, including Todd Clanton, ’03, Garrett Lange, ‘03, Denis Ponder, ’02, Victor Sizemore, ’02, and Shane Vidovic, ‘02.

Ross hammers competition


Heather Ross, '01

Hettie Ross, ‘01, broke her own record in the hammer this spring, throwing 137.2 inches, 3.5 better than her old record of 133.7. Ross is the first athlete to hold a hammer record at Berea College. She also competes in discus and shot put, while maintaining a 3.3 GPA. She received the Wierwille Award last year.

Coach Martha Beagle’s women’s track team broke several records this season, including the 4 x 100 sprint medley relay, the hammer, pole vault, and shot put and won 13 of 20 events at the Twilight Meet hosted by Berea College.

Napier, ’01, national award winner



Jessica Napier, '01

Jessica Napier, ’01, has been honored as the Outstanding Major of the Year in Physical Education by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE.) The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding students majoring in physical education or sport from colleges and universities throughout the country. Over 200 students from around the country were honored at a ceremony and reception during the 116th Annual Convention of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) in Cincinnati.

During her collegiate years, Napier was also involved in women’s basketball and Students for Appalachia. She was selected as a Weddington Scholar in 2000 and was recently awarded the Harriet Poynter Beldon Graduate Fellowship by the Berea College education department. Napier plans to begin graduate study in health, physical education, and recreation at Morehead State University in the fall.

Softball team has best season in history


Joy Beth Dewitt, '01

The women’s Mountaineer softball team, coached by Scott Buchanan and Mary Carol Thomas, ended their season 20-10, the first winning season in its history.

They broke three records, winning 20 games, compared to the previous 16; scoring 205 runs compared to their previous 185; and a run average of 2.11. Karen Stewart, ’02, led the team with a batting average of .455, followed by Joy Beth Dewitt, ’01, at .395, and LeAnn Tate, ’01, with .335.

The team placed third in their conference, earning a berth in the regional tournament in Athens, Tenn. Marianne Cooper, ’03, Karen Stewart, and LeAnn Tate were named to the All-Region team.

Coach Johnson leads Men’s Track to victory


Matt Byerley, '01

Coach Mike Johnson has coached Men’s Track at Berea College for 19 years. In the last five years, his team has earned an 89% win record.

This year the team ended the season with 31 wins, 14 losses, and 1 tie. The men won the Berea Invitational with 213 points, blowing away the competition. Senior Matt Byerley earned a trip to nationals this year with a time of 2:41:08 in the Rocket City Marathon on Dec. 9, 2000.

Coach Johnson expects an even better season next year due to new recruits from Poland, Kenya, Indiana, and Hawaii, among other places.
