Pittillo Receives Bartholomew Award
 
Devoting your life to studying the world around you is a noble endeavor. And it is this very endeavor, studying the world of plants, especially in Southern Appalachia, that has brought honor and recognition to Dr. J. Dan Pittillo, '61.

The 10th recipient of the Elizabeth Ann Bartholomew Award, presented annually by the Southern Appalachia Botanical Society, Pittillo has more than 40 publications dealing mainly with plant ecology and floristics.

Among his professional activities, Pittillo is the president of the Highlands Biological Foundation Inc., conservation committee chairman of the North Carolina Academy of Sciences and past president of the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society.

The professor of biology at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N. C., received his A.B. in biology from Berea, his M.S. from the University of Kentucky and PhD. in botany from the University of Georgia.

The Bartholomew award is presented in memory of society member Elizabeth Ann Bartholomew to individuals who have distinguished themselves in professional and public service that advances the knowledge and appreciation of the world of plants.
